When the pool and the spa are connected
Many Coachella pools have an attached spa that shares a pump, filter and heater with the pool. Water can escape from the spa shell, its jets and fittings, the spillway between the spa and the pool, or the pipes that serve both.
Because a spa is smaller, the same leak shows up faster. A loss of a few inches is a much bigger share of a spa's water than a pool's, so spa leaks are often noticed first.
The first job is working out which body of water is losing water, and whether the loss only happens when the spa is in use.

How we test

We separate the two systems first, so we know where to look.
Separate the two
Where the plumbing allows, we isolate the spa from the pool and track each water level, to learn which one is losing water.
Check the fittings
Jets, lights, returns and the spillway are common leak points. We check each fitting with dye while the water is still.
Pressure test the lines
The pipes serving the spa are tested separately from those serving the pool, so lines can be ruled in or out.
Our process
Equipment and how long it takes
We use dye, pressure-testing equipment and, for buried lines, electronic listening equipment. A combined pool and spa assessment usually takes about two to three hours, depending on how the two are plumbed together.
We locate leaks; we do not perform the repair itself. An accurate location helps whoever you hire keep any digging small and targeted.

Why spa leaks are worth finding early
A spa leak can be more urgent than a pool leak because a spa holds so little water. A loss that barely moves the level in a pool can leave a spa low enough for the pump to run dry, and a heater running without enough water can be damaged. Spas also hold water at higher temperatures, which puts more strain on gaskets and fittings. If the spa is losing water faster than the pool, or only loses water with the jets on, it is worth booking a test soon rather than topping it up and hoping.

Spas in the Coachella Valley are often used year-round, including heated use on cooler winter nights. Heater cycles and constant use put steady wear on spa fittings. Local water is typically hard, and mineral scale trails around a fitting can be an early sign of a slow leak, so we look for them.

Why does my spa lose water faster than my pool?
A spa holds far less water, so the same leak drops the level faster. It can also have more fittings, such as jets, per gallon.
Can the leak be in the spillway?
Yes. The spillway between a spa and a pool is a known leak point, and we check it with dye.
Do you test with the spa running?
Yes, where needed. Some leaks only appear when jets or the blower are on, so we compare the loss with equipment on and off.
Is a spa leak in the shell or the plumbing?
Either is possible. Testing the fittings, then pressure testing the lines, is how we tell them apart.
