Overview
Why skimmers leak
The skimmer sits at the waterline and connects to a suction line below it. Three areas fail most often: the joint where the skimmer body meets the pool wall, the plumbing connection beneath the skimmer, and the seal between the skimmer and the deck. Movement between the deck and the shell can open a gap over time.
The telltale sign is that water loss slows or stops once the level falls below the skimmer opening. That points to the skimmer area, though it does not say which of the three spots is responsible.
Testing the skimmer separately from the rest of the plumbing avoids paying to investigate the whole system when the problem is local.
Signs of a skimmer leak
- Water stops dropping once it reaches the bottom of the skimmer opening
- Hairline crack around the skimmer throat or lid collar
- Gap or crack in the coping around the skimmer
- Air bubbles in the pump basket while the skimmer is in use
- Damp soil beside the skimmer, outside the pool wall
How we test
How we test a skimmer
We test the skimmer on its own so we know exactly which part is at fault.
Track the level
We watch the water level at the skimmer opening and just below it, to see where the loss slows or stops.
Dye test
With the pump off and the water still, we release a small amount of dye near the skimmer throat and any visible crack. Dye drawn into a gap shows the leak point directly.
Pressure test the connection
We isolate the skimmer line and pressure test it, to check the pipe joint under the skimmer separately from the housing.

Equipment and how long it takes
We use dye, level markers, pressure-testing plugs and gauges, and a light for close inspection. A skimmer assessment typically takes around one to two hours, much of it spent letting the water settle so the dye reads clearly.
We locate leaks; we do not perform the repair itself. An accurate location helps whoever you hire keep any digging small and targeted.

Why skimmer leaks are worth finding early
Skimmer leaks often start small. A hairline gap at the skimmer throat may lose only a little water at first, but every gap tends to widen as the deck and shell move with the seasons. Water escaping at the skimmer can also wash soil from beneath the deck, which is how a minor gap turns into a sunken or cracked deck section. The good news is that skimmer problems are among the easiest to confirm, because a dye test shows directly where water is moving. If your level stops falling at the skimmer opening, it is a quick thing to check.
